Over the last 20+ years, I've spent a lot of time with a wide variety of people and communities. I've had to get to know a lot of people including understanding their local social history. I've spent time hearing from people about how they see their community - warts and all! And yes, I've eaten a lot of cake and drunk a lot of tea and coffee! Sometimes you just have to take that for the team!! But all for the reason of building relationships and gaining understanding of what is actually needed locally and where people are at. This has included formal surveys (both on and off line), and informal data gathering. I've used technology and post it notes with flip charts and coloured dots in equal measure.
Where possible, I will give plenty of opportunity for people involved with the organisation to join in the listening. I believe that this is essential to provide continuity in the community once my work is done, and to ensure local input is clear. This isn't about CommunityDan coming to do everything for you. This is about me walking alongside you as an organisation, encouraging and developing some of your own people along the way, and making sure that you are at the heart of all steps taken.
At the end of my data gathering, I will produce a report containing detailed and summary information, plus some pointers of next steps, and then meet to talk this through with you as appropriate, providing training and guidance as needed.
